Dear friends of the Savoy Society of Ottawa,
The Savoy Society of Ottawa will be holding its Annual General meeting on Monday June 24, 2019 at 7:00 pm at Kitchissippi Church (630 Island Park Dr, Ottawa, ON K1Y 0B7). Anyone who is interested in learning more about the Society may attend, however only members may vote on resolutions.
At this meeting, we will be looking for new Board Members to take over all positions. Many of the current board members have been performing their duties for several years and we are looking for fresh faces to bring new energy and ideas to the Society. Members and non-members are encouraged to attend the meeting and put forward names for new board members. Anyone can be nominated to be a board Member, even if they are not a paid member of the Society. The only exception is that board members cannot be convicted felons or be bankrupt. The current board members will be happy to assist the new board in any capacity and will help in the transition. You may announce your intention in advance or show up at the meeting to announce your intentions.
There must be a minimum of six board members. If there are not six individuals who wish to take over as the Board of Directors, the current Board will put forward a motion to dissolve the Society.
As a volunteer organization operating within a ‘niche’ market of Gilbert and Sullivan comic operas since 1975, the Society lacks interest and public engagement to continue as it has in the past. The current Board members have worked hard to generate enthusiasm and to keep the Society financially stable. To that end, the board members have had to take over responsibilities previously performed in the past by dozens of volunteers. Our hope, not unlike previous years, is that a new group of people will come forward and help Savoy find the right niche in Ottawa’s crowded and competitive community theatre scene going forward.
About the Ottawa Savoy Society
The Ottawa Savoy Society is a volunteer-run community musical theatre organization founded in 1975 with the mission of performing the celebrated comic operas of Gilbert and Sullivan. Over the last 44 years, the Savoy Society has opened the curtain on more than 250 performances and played to over 150,000 people. Savoy is entirely run by a cast of dedicated volunteers who do everything from singing in the shows to balancing its books. As a registered charity rooted in community, Savoy maintains a strong tradition of service and has raised over $100,000 for local charities, supporting the annual Kiwanis Music Festival with a bursary and giving the gift of music to those who cannot afford it, through benefit performances and ticket giveaways. Savoy enjoys a solid reputation in the musical community and prides itself on creating a warm and supportive environment for individuals to engage in artistic expression in a warm and supportive environment.
Thank you for your time and attention!
